JOHN J. HUGHES graduated from Nyack College in1995 (B.S. degree, summa cum laude) with a major in Business Management. He received his law degree from Pace University School of Law in 1998, magna cum laude. Mr. Hughes was Assistant District Attorney in Orange County, New York from 1998 through 2001. Thereafter, he joined the Bertine, Hufnagel firm in 2001, where he continued his litigation skills in local, state and federal courts, concentrating in the areas of trusts and estates, construction and commercial matters, and landlord/tenant disputes.
Mr. Hughes has successfully handled many appeals of civil and criminal actions. His published and reported cases include: WPA Acquisition Corp. v. Lynch, 920 N.Y.S.2d 223 (2nd Dept. 2011); In re Hyra, 916 N.Y.S.2d 207 (2nd Dept. 2011); In re Ernestine R., 916 N.Y.S.2d 407 (2nd Dept. 2009); People v. Basak, 712 N.Y.S.2d 877 (2nd Dept. 2000); People v. Jones, 696 N.Y.S.2d 902 (2nd Dept. 1999).
When he is not zealously advocating in court on behalf of his clients, Mr. Hughes represents both corporate and individual clients in the drafting and negotiation of real estate contracts, leases and construction contracts.
Mr. Hughes is admitted to practice in New York, California and Arizona, and in the United States District Courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
